A famous historic home with National Monument status in Newlands, Cape Town, has come onto the market via Anne Porter Knight Frank at a price of R14 million. Dating back to 1729, the Red House, as it is known, was an early Georgian hunting lodge built in the outlying area of Newlands. It was used the autocratic governor Lord Charles Somerset to entertain hunting parties. The walls of the Red House are approximately 1m thick. It has six bedrooms (four of which are en-suite) and is situated close to the prestigious Newlands Avenue precinct where in recent years it has operated as a guest house. Ed Kok of Anne Porter Knight Frank who with Callie Porter is handling the sale of the home said that it is in fact a near perfect hospitality venue because its reception and communal rooms are so large, comfortable and exceptionally well furnished. Internally, the home has cast-iron open hearth fire places and most of the floors are made of Oregon pine, some of which have been carpeted over. Many also have under floor heating. The home incorporates a large pool and outdoor entertaining area, a small spa with a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi as well as massage facilities. There is also a separate cottage with en suite accommodation. Lanice Steward, Managing Director of Anne Porter Knight Frank has commented that APKF has a tradition of handling old homes in Newlands and Bishopscourt and it would, she said, “be a pleasure” to see this well-known iconic landmark taken over by someone who would make good use of it and keep it open to its appreciative public.
